CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to all the children who received the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Bernadette’s last Sunday, celebrated by Bishop John Arnold. May the gifts of the Holy Spirit strengthen and guide you as you continue to grow in faith. We keep you all in our prayers as you continue your journey with Christ.

UNION OF CATHOLIC MOTHERS (UCM)

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 14th October with Mass at 7pm followed by a meeting at 7.30pm. The Union of Catholic Mothers are visiting the newly refurbished Salford Cathedral on Wednesday 21st October. Getting the tram from Radcliffe at about 10.00am to Victoria Station and then a bus to the Cathedral. We will be able to look around the Cathedral, then stay for Mass at 12.15pm. Afterwards, we will maybe go for lunch in Manchester before making our own way home. We would be very pleased to see anyone who would like to join us.

AUTUMNAL SOIREE

Our next parish evening will be held on Thursday 22nd October at 730pm in the Atrium. Please come along and enjoy this event. Bring your own refreshments. Add your name to the list in the Atrium.

SVP SICK MASS & ANOINTING OF THE SICK

The SVP warmly invites parishioners to a special Sick Mass and Anointing of the Sick at St. Mary & St. Philip Neri RC Church on Saturday 24th October at 1.30pm, celebrated by Fr. Brady. Please join us in prayer for the sick, housebound and bereaved, followed by refreshments in the Atrium courtesy of the Union of Catholic Mothers. All are welcome.

NOVEMBER DEAD

Throughout the month of November, we remember our beloved relatives and friends who have died throughout our lives and who we wish to pray for during the month of the Holy Souls. Envelopes are now available in the Atrium for the names (or list of names) of those we have loved. For example: parents, relatives, priests etc. Please hand envelopes to Fr. Brady or the Parish Office.

OFFICE HOURS

Wednesday & Friday 9am – 3pm

CHRISTMAS FAIR

The Christmas Fair will be 5th December from 11am-1pm. We are looking for donations of Bottles, Gifts, Fancy Goods, Chocolate and Tombola Goods. Wrapped and unwrapped items for the £1 parcels, children, ladies and gents. Also, Raffle Prizes for the ‘Bi Raffle’ and ‘Pre Loved teddies and soft toys.’ These can be left in the Parish Office. Please sign the ‘Helper’s List if you are able to help. Help is also needed on the Friday from 4pm to set up for the Fair.

MISSIO

Could you support the global Catholic Church by volunteering for Missio? Missio is the Pope’s charity for World Mission. Through the Red Box, Missio ignites God’s love by helping local missionaries to work alongside global communities that are poor or in need, regardless of their background or belief. Our parish needs a new volunteer to promote the work of Missio and coordinate the Red Box Scheme. This can work around your own commitments and full training and support is provided by Missio. Please ask Fr. Brady for an information pack if you are interested. Thank you.

SICK AND RETIRED CLERGY APPEAL

Our diocesan Sick and Retired Clergy Fund ensures our retired priests can begin the next chapter of their vocation with confidence, knowing the Church they have served will continue to accompany them as they age. Every gift to the fund helps to provide the care, dignity and practical support our priests deserve after years of dedicated service. More information is available in the Atrium with QR Code and other ways you can make your donation.

MINI GIANTS

Every Wednesday 11am-12.30pm. Mini Giants would love to invite you to come and join our sessions. Kings Church Bolton will provide a safe early years environment with toys, activities, open play, story time, music and snacks. A social place for you to build friendships whilst your little ones play together. Sessions are open to all parents, grandparents, carers and childminders with children aged 0-5 years old. Kings Church Centre, The Mill, Bury New Road, BL3 6QE

SAFEGUARDING REMINDER

For the safety and wellbeing of all our children, we kindly ask that parents and carers accompany their child if they need to leave Mass for any reason (for example to use the toilet). Please remember that the Church doors remain open during Mass, and therefore children should not leave the building unaccompanied. Thank you.

STAY WITH US, LORD, ON OUR JOURNEY

THIS WEEK’S GOSPEL

A wedding is a time of joy and of completion after long preparation, a time of love and of complete satisfaction.

In Judaism at the time of Jesus, the coming of the Messiah is often compared to the joy of a wedding-feast.

The marriage-feast at Cana must have been some party!

At Mary’s request Jesus produced 900 litres of wine.

The Letter to the Ephesians teaches that the love in a human wedding is only a foretaste of Christ’s love for his bride, the Church.

In the story of the royal wedding in this Sunday’s Gospel, however, two things go drastically wrong.

First, the original wedding guests refuse to come.

Not only do they refuse, but they brutally maltreat the innocent messengers, and the king (who must represent God) ruthlessly burns down their city.

Secondly, the man who has no wedding garment is thrown out: a wedding-garment is a standard Jewish image for works of generosity expected of every faithful Jew.

For us Christians too, the story constitutes a double warning.

BAPTISMS Please see Fr. Brady after Mass if you would like to have your child baptised, where all enquiries will be dealt with in person. Fr Brady much prefers this rather than an email. Thank you. A baptismal certificate for one of the parents must be provided as evidence of baptism in a Roman Catholic Church. Fr. Brady is available after weekend Mass on Saturday at 5.30pm, Sunday at 9.00am or 10.30am, all of which fulfil the Sunday obligation. All Catholics are OBLIGED to celebrate Mass EVERY Sunday.

BAPTISM CERTIFICATE COPIES REQUESTS For those requesting copies of baptism certificate the office can be contacted initially and the certificate can be collected at any of the weekend Masses. This is also to encourage people to come to Mass.

SICK AND HOUSEBOUND If you know of anybody who would like Fr Brady to visit, could you please give him their name and address with postcode and a contact telephone number. Thank you.

MASS INTENTIONS, OUR LADY’S LAMP AND THE SANCTUARY LAMP  The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for loved ones, living or deceased, is a beautiful and wonderful part of our Catholic Tradition. Continuing this long-standing practice, you can remember someone who has died recently or many years ago. The Mass can also make beautiful gifts for any special occasion: birthdays, anniversaries, in thanksgiving for a prayer answered etc. You can offer an intention for anybody who is struggling with a serious illness or other difficulties of life. There are Mass Intention Envelopes provided on the table in the Atrium. (Please ensure that you have the express consent of the sick or housebound person as the bulletin is posted on the parish website, therefore making that information available to the public at large. Please provide a contact number with Mass Intentions so that any discrepancies can be resolved. Our Lady’s Lamp and Sanctuary Lamp are £5.00 and burn for seven days. Please place any intentions in an envelope with your donation and give to Father Brady or place in the Mass offering Box in the Atrium. All newsletter items must be sent in by Thursday morning.
